Unveiling the Layers: Anatomy of an 8 - Layer PCB Stack - up
8-layer PCBs are high-performance workhorses, made up of 3 cores, 4 PP sheets, and 8 copper layers. The number of PP sheets is usually adjusted to meet impedance or voltage withstand requirements.
True to their name, 8-layer PCBs have eight distinct stacked layers, each with a key role. The outermost layers (L1 and L8) are signal layers, acting as main thoroughfares for electrical signals. They handle most component connections, carrying data to and from parts.
Moving inward, L2 and L7 often serve as power planes, distributing power across the board to ensure components get the right amount of electricity. L4 and L6 are typically ground planes, acting as the “zero” reference point for signals. These dedicated ground layers reduce noise and interference in signal layers, boosting overall performance.
Sandwiched between these planes are L3 and L5, additional signal layers that provide extra routing space. In complex designs—like high-speed applications or those with many components—these extra layers prevent overcrowding, similar to adding more lanes to a busy highway to ease traffic.

Stacking It Right: Common Thickness and PP Stack-Up
When it comes to thickness, 8-layer PCBs come in a few standard sizes. For example, 1.6mm is a popular choice. In a 1.6mm 8-layer board, you might have a setup where the core board thickness is around 0.8mm. This core could be made up of two 0.4mm thick FR-4 cores. The copper thickness on the outer layers might be 35um (micrometers), while the inner layers could have 18um of copper.
The prepreg (PP) thickness also matters. In this 1.6mm board, you could have multiple layers of PP with a total thickness of around 0.8mm. The PP is what bonds the different layers together. A common stack-up might involve three layers of 0.25mm PP and one layer of 0.05mm PP. This combination helps achieve the desired overall thickness while maintaining good bonding strength.
For a 1.2mm 8-layer PCB, the core thickness could be reduced to around 0.6mm, with corresponding adjustments to the PP thickness. Maybe two layers of 0.3mm PP are used, along with appropriate core and copper thicknesses. The 1.0mm and 0.8mm boards follow a similar logic, with the thickness of each component adjusted proportionally to reach the target overall thickness.
Cracking the Code: Impedance Calculation
Impedance is a big deal in PCB design, especially for high-speed signals. In an 8-layer PCB, calculating impedance correctly is crucial. We always use Polar Si9000 to simulate the impedance and calculate the line width and dielectric thickness.Â
The formula for impedance calculation involves factors like the dielectric constant of the material (which is mainly determined by the core and PP materials), the thickness of the dielectric layers, the width of the signal traces, and the distance between the signal trace and the nearest plane (either power or ground).
For example, if you have a signal trace on an outer layer of an 8-layer board, the impedance will be affected by the thickness of the PP layer between it and the nearest plane, say the ground plane below it. A thinner PP layer generally leads to a lower impedance, while a wider signal trace also decreases impedance. 8 layer PCB manufacturers, especially those well-versed in high-speed designs or hdi board production, need to be masters at impedance calculation. They’ll use software tools and years of experience to fine-tune the board design to meet the required impedance specifications. This ensures that signals travel smoothly without reflections or signal integrity issues, which can be a real headache in high-speed applications.
The Insulating Act: PP Thickness, Insulation Layer, and Voltage Resistance
The insulation layer of an 8 – layer PCB mainly uses PP material. Its thickness links to PP thickness but isn’t direct, as copper patterns (residual copper rate) matter. High residual copper makes PP flow more during pressing, thinning insulation. Thinner insulation risks breakdown under high voltage; thicker resists better. For high – voltage 8 – layer PCBs (e.g., industrial), manufacturers calculate and adjust PP thickness/copper patterns per voltage needs. Understanding this ensures reliable quick PCB prototypes or mass production.
| Insulation Thickness | AC Withstand (1s) |
|---|---|
| 0.05mm | 250V |
| 0.10mm | 500V |
| 0.15mm | 750V |
